Life Lately
I started my blog in college, circa 2014. Back then, people generally relied on filters to enhance the low-quality pictures of their food.
Between then and now, I used Instagram and Facebook to promote my posts with varying levels of success. I also used it to connect with friends and because it’s FUN! At some point, I became more conscious of its addictive nature, and the temptation for comparison or curiosity. I took temporary hiatuses during Lent or for an undecided amount of time throughout the years.
As I’ve gotten older and become more conscious of my phone usage, I have deliberated a lot about the merit of being on social media. Especially now as a mom, I know that using it has repercussions beyond the realm of me and my followers. It is also something I have found very hard to moderate. When I first started using social again in 2021 after a two-ish year break, I placed a 30-minute limit on the app. It worked for a certain amount of time and then overriding it became second nature.
Like many creators I’m sure, I find the algorithm a complete mystery. If a post bombs, I have no idea why. There is little to no feedback and posting over and over without seeing improvement in your statistics or the response it gets can be wildly disappointing. Especially when combined with the fifty thousand other accounts who are doing exactly what you hope to do but with twice your resources and much more success.
After about a year a year and a half of posting weekly, I decided to take another break. I felt so discouraged by the seeming lack of success of my account that I thought a step back could help me recover and get some perspective. Let me be clear: I don’t think social media is bad. However, it can bring out vices in us which we must work to check—or they will get the best of us. During this time off, I have been contemplating what I think using social media well looks like and how I can set myself up for success.
Inspo
One of my favorite podcasts for the past two years has been the Jen Fulwiler Show. Not only is she entertaining to listen to, but she is also very WISE. As a mom of 6, she understands many of the challenges of raising children today as well as balancing motherhood with pursuing your passions. I absolutely love her content and was so excited when she announced her new comedy special, Maternal Instinct—which you can now watch on YouTube!
Pretty things
I recently discovered a Catholic skincare company: Regina’s Skincare. I was so excited to see that their products have SUPER clean ingredients and the price point is awesome!. I ordered their moisturizing cream and have been loving it! I haven’t even been using foundation since I started using it, my skin really glows. If you’re in the market for some non-toxic skincare you’re going to love their products. AND if you use the code: KATECO10, you get 10% off your first purchase!
I hope you have a peaceful week!
In camaraderie,
Miranda Kate
