God doesn’t shortchange

Life Lately

Happy April! I hope you had a wonderful, celebratory, peaceful Easter octave. I got a little cold on Easter that has lingered for several days now, but we nevertheless found ways to celebrate this happy season. My favorite was the Emmaus walk we took together on Monday. We learned that recreating the disciples’ walk and meal with Jesus post-resurrection was actually a Church tradition at one point. We ended up picking up pub-subs (probably not the traditional meal of choice) and taking them to a park by the water. I love finding simple ways to keep the traditions going in our faith.

We are still in a holding pattern with Stephen’s job search. Hoping to get some good news this week… more on that later!

Life Lessons: God doesn’t shortchange

This job search has been longer and slower than we thought it would be. This has been especially challenging since for me, planning is like a shot of tequila to an AA attendee. I love making plans to the point that it is a little unhealthy. So when our future is temporarily and entirely uncertain, I struggle.

It’s easy during times like these when everything is just a little harder than normal, or when we’re waiting (and waiting) for something, to feel like God is holding out on us. For example, this weekend Stephen and I were supposed to go look at a house. We had received some good news about a potential job and decided that maybe it would be smart to check out this property we’ve had our eye on. That way if we decide we like it, we would be able to make an offer as soon as the job offer came through.

It all came together very quickly. We called a realtor Thursday afternoon, scheduled the viewing that evening, and were in the car Friday by 9 am. It was a four-hour drive. About two hours in, our realtor called and told us that actually the house was unavailable for viewing until week after next. We turned around.

This hit us especially hard because #1 we are really excited about this house, and #2 because it gave us some semblance of control over our lives and felt like we were actually making progress for the first time in a while.

It felt like God slammed the door in our faces. But as I sat in the front seat contemplating our ill fortunes, I thought about all the times things hadn’t worked out in my life, and then something better came along. God doesn’t shortchange. He is always working things out for our good. Sometimes we may not be in agreement about what ‘good’ IS, but He is looking out for us. Maybe there’s a much better house out there that we haven’t seen yet. Maybe this job won’t work out so it would have been pointless anyway. I’m not sure, but I know that God isn’t holding out on us—He has a plan.

Info & Inspo

I’ve really been loving Ciao Amber’s Instagram account. She has some solid insights about parenting and motherhood that are super practical and have given me a lot of food for thought. This episode of the Jen Fulwiler show was straight fire. Also, loooved the dining room inspo from In Honor of Design!

Here’s to unplanning.

In camaraderie,

Miranda Kate
