Simple Ways to Celebrate the Sacred Heart of Jesus

This is a little late in the game. But Friday, June 24 is the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

This devotion began early in the Church’s history (you can see it in the writings of early Saints like Jerome, Augustine, Ambrose, and Catherine of Siena). But it became more popular after the revelations that came to Saint Marguerite Marie Alacoque in the 17th century. St. Catharine of Siena is actually my confirmation saint and she has written a fair amount about the heart of Jesus which you can find in the book The Secret of the Heart which I read last year—she had an incredible passion and love for our Lord!

You can read a summary of the devotion and how it came about here.

This is a truly beautiful devotion that I am excited to celebrate this week. We are having a little get together Thursday evening in order to do just that.

If you also want to participate in the celebration of this beautiful part of our Faith, here are some simple ideas to get you started!

  1. wear red!
  2. buy some sweet treats to share (ideas: red-velvet anything, chocolate-covered strawberries, or heart-shaped candy!)
  3. make a little drink: sangria is perfect for this occasion, and not difficult to make. A simple red wine is another good option!
  4. say the prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
  5. go to Mass or do a Holy Hour and pray for a greater devotion to His Most Sacred Heart
  6. learn more about this incredible tradition!

  7. listen to one of these:

I hope these ideas help you join in the celebrations of this important solemnity, it’s such a gift!

If you do celebrate, let me know 🙂

In all sincerity,

Miranda
